Virtual Sketch Date: Sunquats

I decided this morning to try this month's Virtual Sketch Date. The reference photo for this month was provided by Leslie Hawes. This was probably a stretch of my colored pencil abilities but I had fun and I learned a lot. It's about 5.5 by 3.5 inches in colored pencil in one of my sketchbooks.

Otherwise, I've been struggling with a painting lately. It's a new surface (gessoed masonite) and somewhat of a different subject matter for me. It's still at the ugly stage but I think I'm getting it whipped into shape.

Hi Sydney,
Very nice work!
I'm glad you were able to take time to join in.

I think a lot of people have cropped this image. It really concentrates on the fruit and these colours are lovely. Very nice.

Nice job and I like how you cropped the photo. I also like the colors seen in the dark shadow of the fruit hanging just behind the other.

I love the colors and the crop job. Did you use colored pencils?

Thanks everyone! I enjoyed it. I'm glad I found the Virtual Sketch Date.

shicat - Yes, it's done in colored pencil. I didn't make it all that obvious so added a statement.

Good job. I like the crop you used. Also the brightness and shading of the fruit.

Hi Sydney!

I love the reflected greens on the fruit...not something I considered. This is nicely done.

Hmmm...I thought I commented here already. I wonder if I have commented on some entries multiple times and others not at all.

Anyway, nice colored pencil work Sydney! I love how bright the piece is and how you repeated the greens in the fruit.

jeanneg, rose, and stacy - Thanks for the kind words!

stacy - Maybe Blogger had a moment and ate your comment. I always seem to lose track of where I've commented.

Beautiful--so very sunstruck! The colors are lovely and I like the texture I can see, where colors overlap ...

I love the colors you got in the shadows on the fruit, and the color you chose for the background. Good job!

laura, kylie, leslie - Thanks! It looks much better now that I've had a chance to walk away from it for a while.

I just noticed the "Croppers" must have been very much in need of fruit. They chose the "Sunquat" section to render. All of them done beautiful and in so many different ways. I have learned from all of them.

The colors are lush, and you can taste the fruit.

The sunquats were so lovely, I just had to focus on them. That's what I like about these things, everyone does them a little different, all of them nicely done. I always learn something from the experience.
